The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is the highest court in the federal judiciary of the United States. It has ultimate appellate jurisdiction over all U.S. federal court cases, and over state court cases that involve a point of U.S. Constitutional or federal law. It also has original jurisdiction over a narrow range of cases, specifically "all Cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, and those in which a State shall be Party." The court holds the power of judicial review, the ability to invalidate a statute for violating a provision of the Constitution. It is also able to strike down presidential directives for violating either the Constitution or statutory law. However, it may act only within the context of a case in an area of law over which it has jurisdiction. The court may decide cases having political overtones, but has ruled that it does not have power to decide non-justiciable political questions.

The Supreme Court Bar

The Supreme Court Bar is the highest level of legal practice an attorney participate in. Being a member of the bar is considered a very prestigious recognition. Those who have been admitted are known to have a high level of legal knowledge, far superiror to others within the nation. Along with the membership and title, members of the Supreme Court Bar are provided the following privileges:

  • Permitted to file amicus briefs in ongoing cases in the Supreme Court.
  • Authorized to represent parties in cases before the Supreme Court (the Attorney General and Solicitor General are admitted autonomously for this reason).
  • Allowed to practice in any court in the United States.

Although there are significant benefits affixed to being a member of the bar, there are also serious repercussions fo rmisconduct. Being disbarred from the Bar of the Supreme Court also disqualifies you from practicing in the lower courts. Suspension from the bar will, no matter for how long, disqualify said barred individual from all courts until the suspension is lifted.

As of 2/5/2023, there are 37 members of the Supreme Court Bar.
